The goal of Shut The Box is to try to close all nine boxes to score the lowest number of points possible. One, two, three or four boxes may be closed with each throw of the dice, but the total number on the boxes closed must equal the total number of pips on the dice. In a very intuitive, hands-on game, the "dice" are rolled by clicking on Sparky, and boxes are closed by clicking on them.
Brief instructions are available in Zoomer’s console on the upper right-hand part of the screen. This will help your child while learning how to play the game, and will help their reading skills!
After each roll of the dice, a round total is kept. Children practice addition and subtraction skills when totalling their round and total scores. Turns alternate until the round in which one player has a total of 100 or more. The player with the lowest total score wins the game.
Shut The Box emphasizes the following life skills: addition, subtraction, estimation and probability, place value and mental arithmetic, strategic thinking, problem solving and last, but not least, reading.
We are very pleased to announce that our math games have been awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Educational Software for 2001 by the Educational Software Cooperative.
